Basic Education Skills Training Program (BEST)

The Basic Education Skills Training Program (BEST) is designed for recipients of Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF) through the Department of Human Services (DHS). Activities and courses are planned to meet the individual needs of eligible participants through assessment, counseling, General Education Development (GED) preparation courses, life skills, and job readiness. Financial assistance is also available for career technology courses for BEST participants. The ultimate goal of BEST is to have the participant succeed in his/her employment goals and find suitable employment.

Who is eligible

• Any individual who is currently receiving TANF cash benefits (support)
• Participants must be 17 years of age or older

• Metro Technology Centers Orientation
• Academic enhancement (for GED preparation)
• Life skills components to foster growth and success
• Job readiness courses
• Individualized Employment Strategies Plan
• Computerized Placement Services (G.E.M.)
• Training at one of Metro Technology Centers' campuses
• Customized training courses for BEST participants
• ADA 504 accommodations are available to students with disabilities
• ESL interpreters are available to non-English speaking students
• Computer literacy training available for all participants
